In June of 1997 Dan Taylor, his wife Kristen and daughter Morgan came to Green Bay to start a new church plant in the community of De Pere. With the help of First Assembly of God church in Green Bay, they began forming relationships with the community and shared their vision for a new kind of church for young families. In August, Dan & Kristen held an informational meeting where they shared their vision and invited people to be a part of this new church.
They began holding services on Wednesday nights in their home with approximately 10-15 people attending. In the spring of 1998 they held 3 preview services at West De Pere High School to increase awareness of the vision. It aroused little interest but Dan and Kristen kept with the plan of God and the vision before them and on April 12th of 1998, New Life Christian Fellowship held their first church service at Heritage Elementary School in De Pere. Although attendance was small at first, throughout the next 6 years, new families became a part of the church and more people and young families gave their hearts to Christ. In December of 1998, New Life became incorporated. In 2002, New Life purchased the building at 115 North Wisconsin Street in De Pere and was ready to start renovations. Through much prayer, hard work, and perseverance the building was completely renovated. On June 20th, 2004 New Life had their first church service in the new facility.
In June of 2006, Dan & Kristen left New Life to become the new Lead Pastor at Shawano Assembly of God which left New Life looking for a new leader. This called for the congregation to team together to pray for the person God wanted to lead this church. While the Search Team spent several weeks dealing with meetings, phone interviews and viewing resumes, Sheldon Miles, a Youth Minister in Kettering, Ohio had a call on his heart to lead a new kind of church, and in August of 2006 New Life began to talk to Sheldon on the phone.
On Labor Day weekend of 2006, Sheldon was asked by the Search Team to come and interview. The team was excited about the interview and felt strongly about asking him to come and candidate for the position. On the weekend of September 22-24th Sheldon came with his family to candidate for the Lead Pastor position. On Sunday, September 24th, Sheldon was voted in as the new Lead Pastor for New Life with a unanimous vote.
On Saturday, October 28, Sheldon and his wife Michelle along with their two children Tyler and Kristen moved from Ohio to De Pere. His first official service was Sunday, October 29th, 2006.
Since that time, the church has been part of many community events as well as hosting their own outreaches including the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon, Fall Festival, Pancake Breakfast & Easter Egg Hunt, and the Memorial Day Parade. As growth continued to happen, the leadership team began to look at options to either expand or move. After much prayer and conversations, it was voted in early 2011 to purchase the old Palookas Bar & Van Vegel’s Auction House at 2050 Profit Place in De Pere. Not long after that, approval was given to change the building address to 418 Destiny Drive. And on January 8, 2012, the church voted to change the name of the church to reflect better its purpose and mission to our surrounding community. Destiny Church became the new name of the church on January 15th, 2012.
After months of hard work by dedicated servant leaders at Destiny Church, phase 1 of the reconstruction of the building on Destiny Drive was completed. This phase included the main gathering area (Liberty Hall), offices, and the Children’s wing. Our church passed the inspection on March 21st and the church officially moved in on March 25th. The first service at 418 Destiny Drive was held Sunday, April 1, 2012!
Today, Destiny Church continues to grow and see lives renewed in Jesus’ name. We are grateful for where we’ve been and are excited to press on to new heights and watch as God writes our destiny for His glory!
