“You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God.Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?…” James 2:19. “Just as the body is dead without breath,so also faith is dead without good works.” James 2:26
Every time I read this passage I think about airplanes. (Fly with me on this one a bit…) I grew up in a home that was right near an airport. Everyday dozens of planes flew right over our house. I loved it! I became a professional plane watcher! At first, I questioned every plane’s ability to fly until my Dad eventually taught me about the aerodynamics of planes and how they were able to fly. I soon became a plane-believer that planes really could fly. Yet, there was a part of me that felt like something was missing. I always wondered what it would be like to fly myself.
It wasn’t until college when I took my first plane trip that I actually PUT MY FAITH IN PLANES. I did this by purchasing a ticket, getting in the plane, sitting in the seat, and letting the plane take off with me inside. When I landed safely at my destination, I became a TRUE BELIEVER.
When it comes to our faith-journey, it is so easy to say “I BELIEVE.” Well really, what is that? James points out that even the demons believe in God and look where it’s going to get them. The big challenge here is BELIEVING IS NOT ENOUGH. In order for your faith to truly come alive and transform your life, it’s going to take you to ACT ON IT. God wants all of us to put what we believe into action and that’s when it becomes REAL FAITH.
In your life, take some time and ask God where He wants you to take some action in order for your beliefs to come alive and be transformed into faith. Keep growing!
