SIN! What is it anyhow? When we read the Bible, we see warnings and the affects of it all over the place. Have you ever just wondered though what God considers to be SIN? We do know this, that it’s really bad and there are consequences for this behavior (Rom. 6:23), both here on Earth and eternally. In last Sunday’s message I defined it as, “When we deliberately DISOBEY God or REBEL against His Word.” So, what then would be an example of what SIN looks like?
King Solomon, one of the wisest men who ever lived (1 Kings 4:29-34), gives a few strong examples of what SIN could look like for the average person. “Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and evil actions are all SIN.” (Proverbs 21:4 NLT) Let’s look a little deeper.
- “Haughty Eyes” – “When we are haughty, we become the center of our universe; everything revolves around us. There is little, if any, concern for what others think and no consideration of the will of God. When we are at the center of our world, then nothing that we want is unlawful to us.”
- “A Proud Heart” – Someone once said, “Pride is the trunk of the tree from which all other sins sprout.”
- “Evil Actions” – Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “evil” as a morally reprehensible action that causes harm.
No matter how you slice up SIN, it all points to the selfishness of our heart. In Matt. 22:37-39, Jesus gives us the antidote to countering SIN. He says, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Today, I want to encourage you to sit down and ask yourself honestly if you are struggling in any of these three areas. If so, first ask God to forgive you for your SIN. (That’s what the Cross was all about!) Secondly, ask God to put His Spirit of LOVE inside of you to be the antidote to SIN. Third, take what God has placed inside of you and live LOVE out loud!
