According to the Bible, one of the biggest obstacles there is to living the Generous Journey is PRIDE. The Apostle Paul says in (1 Timothy 6:17-19 NLT) Teach those who are RICH in this world not to be PROUD and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
Who are the “RICH”? Last Sunday we established the fact that if you live in the United States, you are the “RICH” people in this world. Did you know that if you make $25,000 a year, you earn more than 90% of world population? And, if you make more than $50,000 a year, you live in the top 1% of the world population? The Bible says that the struggle “RICH” people (you and I) have is PRIDE. C.S.Lewis says this about Pride.
“Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind…Pride is essentially competitive – by its very nature … Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. If everyone else became equally rich, or clever, or good looking there would be nothing to be proud about. It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone.”
All of us in one way or another have experienced the pitfalls that PRIDE brings into our lives. The challenge in living the Generous Life is live HUMBLY. This means to look “out of the box” in our lives and into the needs of others. When we see these needs, we then act generously, the way God intended. It’s then that we will experience the very thing we are each longing for…”TRUE LIFE.” Give it a try!
